ADI’s protection devices (including the former LT and Maxim product lines) are divided into two main categories: ESD (electrostatic discharge) protectors (signal-side transient protection) and hot-swap controllers (power path surge, short-circuit and hot-swap protection). Both form part of the PowerPath protection solution and are frequently used in combination in servers, industrial applications, automotive systems, humanoid robots and communications boards.
I. ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Protectors (ESD/TVS Arrays)
1. Core Principles
High impedance and low parasitic capacitance under normal conditions; upon the arrival of an ESD pulse, nanosecond-level avalanche or snapback conduction diverts the static electricity to earth, clamping the port voltage to a safe level; once the static electricity dissipates, high impedance is restored without affecting signal transmission. ADI’s ESD solutions are characterised by low input capacitance, making them suitable for high-speed differential signals. They are categorised into two types: standalone ESD diode arrays and USB/signal switches with integrated ESD protection.
2. Key Features
1. Low junction capacitance (Cj): High-speed interface models achieve sub-pF levels, ensuring signal integrity for USB, HDMI, PCIe, LVDS, I²C and 1-Wire, whilst preventing eye closure;
2. ESD rating: Compliant with IEC 61000-4-2, supporting ±8 kV contact discharge and ±15 kV air discharge; with some models offering up to 27 kV HBM;
3. Bidirectional / unidirectional, multi-channel arrays: single-channel, 2-channel, 4-channel and 8-channel, suitable for centralised protection of multiple signal ports;
4. Some models feature integrated isolation resistors: for example, the DS9503 incorporates a 5 Ω isolation resistor, providing further isolation for the downstream circuit; its failure mode is short-circuit type, preventing cascading damage;
5. Low leakage current: suitable for battery-powered, low-power IoT devices.
3. Typical Models
- DS9503: Dedicated 1-Wire ESD protection with built-in isolation resistor and reverse-sweep clamping structure; suitable for temperature sensors and building control buses;
- MAX20044F: Integrated ESD protection and power switch for USB 2.0 ports, with ±15 kV air/±8 kV contact ESD protection; supports USB OTG; designed for in-vehicle USB applications;
- Multi-channel, low-capacitance ESD arrays (Maxim series): Used for HDMI, DisplayPort and high-speed differential signals; suitable for industrial cameras and robotic vision interfaces;
- General-purpose TVS arrays: for low-speed I/O, push-buttons and sensor interfaces; prioritise cost-effectiveness with precise clamping voltages.
4. Typical Applications
USB/Type-C, HDMI, Ethernet, I²C, SPI, LVDS, cameras, sensors and human-machine interface push-buttons; suitable for humanoid robot I/O interfaces, in-vehicle ADAS peripherals and signal ports on industrial automation equipment.
II. Hot-Swap Controllers
1. Core Function
Hot-swap protection safeguards the power path. Objective: When a board is inserted directly into a live backplane, it limits the charging inrush current of high-capacity input capacitors on the downstream side, preventing the backplane power supply from being overloaded and MOSFETs from being damaged; It also provides protection against overcurrent, short circuits, overvoltage (OV) and undervoltage (UV), overheating, and reverse polarity. It can be understood as a ‘programmable electronic circuit breaker + soft-start controller’; most models operate in conjunction with an external N-channel MOSFET, whilst some models feature a built-in power MOSFET.
2. Core Operating Process
1. Board inserted into backplane → The controller drives the gate of the external N-channel MOSFET, initiating a ramp-up soft start to gradually raise the output voltage and charge the board’s capacitors at a controlled rate;
2. Real-time sampling detects the current through the resistor and supports foldback current limiting: when the voltage difference is high, the current limit threshold is automatically lowered to ensure the MOSFET operates within the Safe Operating Area (SOA);
3. Fault detection: short-circuit/overcurrent triggers; available in variable-speed or bi-level circuit breaker configurations: glitches and short pulses are filtered via delay, whilst sustained short circuits result in rapid shutdown;
4. Choice of two fault response strategies: Latch-off or Auto-Retry;
5. Version with digital monitoring: Built-in ADC for acquiring VIN, VOUT, current, power and temperature, with data reported to the platform management IC via I²C/SMBus/PMBus.
3. List of Core Functions
- Adjustable surge soft-start, foldback current limiting, and two-stage circuit breaker protection;
- OV overvoltage, UV undervoltage, over-temperature protection, and FET SOA (Safe Operating Area) protection;
- Status outputs: Power Good (PGOOD) and Fault Alarm (FAULT);
- Digital interfaces: I²C / SMBus / PMBus, for parameter configuration, telemetry reading and fault black box logging;
